Too Proud Of Me To Speak

Poems from ages ago.

Smart
by Shel Silverstein

My dad gave me one dollar bill
'Cause I'm his smartest son,
And I swapped it for two shiny quarters
'Cause two is more than one!

And then I took the quarters
And traded them to Lou
For three dimes -- I guess he don't know
That three is more than two!

Just then, along came old blind Bates
And just 'cause he can't see
He gave me four nickels for my three dimes,
And four is more than three!

And I took the nickels to Hiram Coombs
Down at the seed-feed store,
And the fool gave me five pennies for them,
And five is more than four!

And then I went and showed my dad,
And he got red in the cheeks
And closed his eyes and shook his head--
Too proud of me to speak!

My Mother's Chocolate Valentine
by Jack Prelutsky

I bought a box of chocolate hearts,
a present for my mother,
they looked so good I tasted one,
and then I tried another.

They both were so delicious
that I ate another four,
and then another couple,
and then half a dozen more.

I couldn't seem to stop myself,
I nibbled on and on,
before I knew what happened
all the chocolate hearts were gone.

I felt a little guilty,
I was stuffed down to my socks,
I ate my mother's valentine...

I hope she likes the box.

Still with happinese

From an Islamic POV (based on Dr.'Aidh ibn Abdullah Al-Qarni's La Tahzan):

1. Know that if you do not live within the scope of today, your thoughts will be scattered, your affairs will become confused, and your worrying will increase - these realities explain the hadith:

"When you are in the morning, do not expect to see the evening, and when you are in the evening, do not expect to see the morning."

2. Forget the past and all that it contained. Being absorbed in things that are gone is sheer lunacy.

3. Do not be preoccupied with the future. Because the future is in the world of the unseen, do not let it bother you until it comes.

4. Do not be shaken by criticism; instead, be firm. And know that, in proportion to your worth, the level of people's criticism rises.

5. Faith in Allah and good deeds: these are the ingredients that make up a good and happy life.

6. Whoever desires peace, tranquility and comfort can find it all in the remembrance of Allah.
"Verily in the remembrance of Allah do the hearts rejoice."
[Ar-Ra'd, 13: 28]

7. You should know with certainty that everything that happens, occurs in accordance with a divine decree.

8. Do not expect gratitude from anyone.
"We feed you for the sake of Allah alone: no reward do we desire from you, nor thanks."
[Al-Insaan, 76: 9]

9. Train yourself to be ready and prepared for the worst eventuality.

10. Perhaps what has happened is in your best interest (though you may not comprehend how that is so).
"But it is possible that ye dislike a thing which is good for you, and that ye love a thing which is bad for you. But Allah knoweth, and ye know not."
[Al-Baqarah, 2: 216]
"It may be that ye dislike a thing, and Allah brings about through it a great deal of good."
[An-Nisaa', 4: 19]

11. Everything that is decreed for the Muslim is best for him.

12. Enumerate the blessings of Allah and be thankful for them.

13. You are better off than many others.

14. Relief comes from one hour to the next.

15. In both times of hardship and ease, one should turn to supplication and prayer.
"O ye who believe! Seek help with patient perseverance and Prayer: for Allah is with those who patiently persevere."
[Al-Baqarah, 2: 153]

16. Calamities should strengthen your heart and reshape your outlook in a positive sense.

17. Indeed, with each difficulty there is relief.
"Verily, with every difficulty there is relief."
[Al-Inshiraah/Ash-Sharh, 94: 6]

18. Do not let trifles be the cause of your destruction.

19. Indeed, your Lord is Oft-Forgiving.
"Pray for His Forgiveness: for He is Oft-Returning (in Grace and Mercy)."
[An-Nasr, 110: 3]

20. Do not be angry... Do not be angry... Do not be angry.
"Abu Hurairah, radiyallahu 'anhu, reported that a man said to the Prophet (pbuh): 'Advise me!' The Prophet said, 'Do not become angry and furious.' The man asked (the same) again and again, and the Prophet said in each case, 'Do not become angry and furious.'"
[Narrated by Bukhari]

21. Life is bread, water and shade; so do not be perturbed by a lack of any other material thing.

"And in the heaven is your provision, and that which you are promised."
[Az-Zaariyaat, 51: 22]

22. Most evil that is supposed to happen never occurs.

23. Look at those who are afflicted and be thankful.

24. When Allah loves a people, He makes them endure trials.

On Happiness

If you, like me, have nothing much to do, then you too would have gone through the list of posts on your blog and found that you have 26 draft posts yet to be published. And, like me, you would choose one that was most relevant to this day and age.

This one is on happiness, with extracts from God knows where (it was centuries ago!).

From western culture point of view:

1. Give people more than they expect and do it cheerfully.

2. Marry a man/woman you love to talk to. As you get older, their conversational skills will be as important as any other.

3. Don't believe all you hear, spend all you have or sleep all you want.

4. When you say, "I love you", mean it.

5. When you say, "I'm sorry", look the person in the eye.

6. Be engaged at least six months before you get married.

7. Believe in love at first sight.

8. Never laugh at anyone's dreams. People who don't have dreams don't have much.

9. Love deeply and passionately. You might get hurt but it's the only way to live life completely.

10. In disagreements, fight fairly. Please, no name calling.

11. Don't judge people by their relatives.

12. Talk slowly but think quickly.

13. When someone asks you a question you don't want to answer, smile and ask, "Why do you want to know?"
How do you say that effectively in Malay?

14. Remember that great love and great achievements involve great risk.

15. Say "bless you" when you hear someone sneeze.
Say "yarhamukAllah/yarhamukIllah".

16. When you lose, don't lose the lesson.

17. Remember the three R's: Respect for self; Respect for others; Responsibility for all your actions.

18. Don't let a little dispute injure a great friendship.

19. When you realize you've made a mistake, take immediate steps to correct it.

20. Smile when picking up the phone. The caller will hear it in your voice.

21. Spend some time alone.

Monday, July 15, 2013

Steps:
1. Heat the olive oil in a large pot (depends on amount of you serving). Then sautee the finely diced onion and garlic till you get the perfect golden yellow.

2. Add the chicken (cut into bite-sized cubes) and sautee till the exterior of the chicken is just cooked. Add the mixed herbs and stir for a few minutes till you can smell the spices in the kitchen.

3. Add enough water to just immerse the chicken. Then add the diced potatoes (and carrots if you want), and after a while, the mushrooms. Again, make sure the water level is just enough to cover everything.

4. Once the potatoes are half cooked, add the mushroom soup and stir well. The canned soup tend to clot if not mixed well.

5. Add the cream and stir regularly. 'Regularly' is the keyword here - cream and cream cheese can also clot.

6. Add seafood last. Never ever overcook your calamari or prawns unless you like the taste of rubber.

7. Once the seafood cook, add milk in an amount that suits your liking

8. Season with salt and pepper.

And we're done.If you want to know your food is cook or not, try potato first. If potato cook , then your food is ready.
Pasta you can follow the instructions on the pack.
Allow an hour for the whole cooking process. Feeds about 4-5 people.

FOOD

I have this bad habit of doing inappropriate things when I'm supposed to be studying. I would always find a reason to clean my room or organise all the books and files in my room. And now, I'm cooking. That is, after I organise my room I want to cook something.Yesterday I made chicken rice. And today it's  time for the pasta, which for those who aren't familiar with it, is a sort of intermediary between alfredo and carbonara.

Things you need:
- Pasta of any shape you like, though if you use strings like tagliatelle or spaghetti, you need to make the soup thicker. I usually like orecchiette, but decided to use eliche today.
- 5 cloves of garlic
- 1 medium sized onion
- Chicken - I used skinless breasts
- Potatoes
- Button mushrooms. Fresh mushrooms are obviously better, but we only have canned ones in my home. But I'm not gonna complain.

- Mixed Italian herbs. You can get this at a lot of major grocery stores but they usually cost a bit if they come in their bottle. I bought thyme, basil and oregano in the refill bags and put them in my own plastic containers.
- Olive oil. This is insanely expensive in Malaysia, so you can always substitute with canola or corn oil.
- Cream.  Again this is insanely expensive but my pasta just doesn't work without it. Costs about RM7 for 250 ml. Alternatively, use a box of cream cheese (200-250 g), which will also burn your wallet.
- Milk - Better to use full cream milk for made the soup much tastier, but I used low fat today just because it was on offer at Mydin.
- 1 can of cream of mushroom soup - Ok, this is absolute cheating, but since we don't have fresh mushrooms which when cooked makes the stock delicious, a girl's gotta do what a girl's gotta do.
- Salt
- Black pepper - Preferably mill ground pepper for the coarse texture which gives a nice kick when you bite into it, but finely ground is just as good.
- Water
- Optional: Carrots, calamari, prawns, mussels

Health effects of obesity in children

Dietary and lifestyle choices of children which result in obesity are difficult to reverse and have adverse implications on health. Morbid obesity is well known to be associated with multiple life threatening medical conditions and the adolescents are no longer immune to these. As the prevalence of obesity increases in adolescents, there is a parallel rise in the prevalence of obesity related diseases like type 2 diabetes mellitus, fatty liver disease, obstructive sleep apnoea and ischemic heart disease.

Type 2 diabetes mellitus: The incidence of diabetes is rising rapidly. It affects the life expectancy and quality of life adversely. Type 2 diabetes is a metabolic disease and is difficult to treat. The insulin which is required for its treatment has anabolic effects and causes further weight gain. This treatment results in a vicious cycle from which it is difficult to come out. Studies have also reported an increased incidence of diabetes related complications like retinopathy which reduces vision, kidney disease and other organ damage. The severity of damage to organs is directly related to the duration of diabetes and hence is an indication for early treatment.

Fatty liver disease: Liver involvement resulting in fatty change is also rising at an alarming rate in obese adolescents. Over a longer duration, it results in hepatitis and then cirrhosis, with failure of liver function. This is commonly called non-alcoholic fatty liver disease and has become a common indication of liver transplantation in young patients.

Obstructive sleep apnoea: There is an obstruction to upper airway at night which results in pauses in breathing, lasting for 20 to 40 seconds. The severity of obesity is related to higher risk of obstructive sleep apnoea. This is also an independent risk factor for ischemic heart disease.

Heart disease: Clinical studies have shown that 75% of obese children in the age group of 15 – 17 years will continue to be obese as adults. The earlier the onset of childhood obesity, higher is the risk of cardio-vascular disease or ischemic heart disease.

Behavioral changes: Obesity results in behavioral consequences in children. Obese children are more likely to be bullied. They are discriminated by their teachers and friends and are viewed as lazy and dull. There is an increase prevalence of depression and a higher risk of not completing their education. In a survey conducted in schools, the obese children were found to have lesser friendship nominations. In severe cases, there is a higher risk of school dropout, suicidal ideation or attempted suicide.
Obesity has become a global burden affecting all age groups, irrespective of socio-economic status. The changing lifestyle of children has resulted in high prevalence of obesity. The complications of obesity are directly related to the duration of obesity. An early intervention can prevent these complications and improve the quality of life.

Dengue

Dengue fever is very dangerous because it can be death. This disease is caused by the aedes mosquito.Aedes mosquitoes breed in stagnant water places like bad cans, coconut shells, tires and flower pots.
Female Aedes mosquitoes lay their eggs in water. That eggs floating on the surface. When enough time, the eggs will hatch and larva will come out of the egg.The larvae will then turn into a pupa.Pupae will turn into adult mosquitoes.Mosquitoes life is not long and can ive for about two weeks.
Anyone can be attacked because of dengue fever mosquito does not choose its victims.Who children often suffer from dengue fever because children do not know and do not know how to kill mosquitoes avoid getting bitten by mosquitoes.Early symptoms of dengue fever are fever, chills, headache, muscles ache and sore veins. For more serious causes, blood will come out of the patient’s nose.Red sport on the skin will grow body,IF not get treatment,a person can face his death and easy spread of dengue fever.

Therefore,we must take care of our residential areas, free from aedes mosquitoes.

Why Common Sense Isn't So Common part 2

On the other hand, you have the individual who perhaps was brought up in a wealthy environment where everything was catered to them and never really had to deal with knowing how to act, understand people, or even understand how to put 2 and 2 together to survive.  This individual simply got accustomed to the luxuries of taking the thinking out of things and emotions, therefore, being told how to think.  Being sheltered for a long time and not exposed to most of life’s basic experiences, creates a disconnection resulting in what we call lack of common sense which really is no different than saying,  ”people just don’t get it”.If you bring to mind some of your friends, family members, and others around you, you might notice that not all are prone to understanding what “entrepreneurship” really is.  You might think to yourself that it makes no sense that someone would want to work for others their entire life and that they never imagine life as an opportunity to reach their true potential, additionally, possibly believe that many of their actions classifies them as people that don’t get it.  Reality being that 30% of a person’s abilities is based on the fact that people are a by-product of their own environment and often their environment or exposure to a certain way of life is why they are, act, or even believe in certain things.  Religion is a good example, as many are born into and brought up within their parent’s religion, despite not understanding anything about it, it is simply accepted that they are either Christians, Muslims, Catholics, or just about anything else.  If you do not separate them from their beliefs, church and all those other activities they are exposed to for the first 15 years of their life, it is very likely that these individuals will forever remain in that religion and with that belief.Very few times are people capable of looking past themselves and their current knowledge and understanding that perhaps their way of being today is the reason their life is so limited tomorrow.  The real question is how self-aware are you?

WHY COMMON SENSE ISN'T SO COMMON

We expect the world to acquire common sense, though we often find ourselves using the line “Common Sense Isn’t so Common”, yet have we ever stopped to analyze why or perhaps what it is that makes some people so much more aware of whats going on around them?  Do we ever wonder why some people are street smart and others with PhD’s are not capable of showcasing common sense in some situations?

Common sense is not so common and it is partly because our past upbringings and situations we have dealt with are also not so common.  As a society, we certainly have some education standards, for example going to school until the age of 18 making it mandatory and in most cases for free.  We also have standards around the type of minimal education each person must go through, such as mathematical, english or history topics.  However, we are not offered education on common sense, maybe perhaps it is because common sense cannot be taught but rather experienced.

When you compare two individuals, one with a high level of education and the other a college dropout, most would assume that the college dropout is more likely to have failed 5 years down the road, although it all really depends on circumstances.  Someone who has been sheltered their entire life, never exposed to real life situations, or even never having experienced earned values is often unable to deal with them in the long run.  While the uneducated high school dropout may not have achieved in school, he will certainly have a much greater sense of survival and self-sufficiency making him more aware of his environment as he depends on it for survival.  This awareness to situations, surroundings and people’s reactions is a direct result of past experiences which in this case are much more amplified than those that have had no choice but to understand their background in order to find themselves and create their place in society.

FASTING...

Hurm..suddenly...i found article about Fasting.....
This article wrote by someone are non-muslim....
I hope this can be reminder for all off us....
Salam Ramadhan.

Ramadan is a religious observance that takes place during the ninth month of the Islamic calendar, believed to be the month in which the Holy Quran began to be revealed.Ramadan is the Islamic month of fasting, in which Muslims are not allowed to eat or drink anything from dawn until sunset.
Fasting is meant to teach the person patience and humility. Ramadan is a time to fast for the sake of God, and to offer even more prayer than usual. Also, asking forgiveness for the sins of the past, asking for guidance in the future, and asking for help with refraining from every day evils and try to purify oneself through self-restraint and good deeds is involved in Ramadan.

However, in Malaysia, the month itself has been tainted with the extreme gluttony during the entire month of fasting. Not sure what I’m talking about? Well, I don’t mean to sound racist but the gluttony among most Muslims in Malaysia can be seen in the Ramadan Bazaar. A few hours before breaking fast, a lot of people will stampede the bazaar in order to buy loads of food for the breaking fast. Sometimes you can see a man buying food in the bazaar as if he’s rationing for the war, which I find pretty ridiculous, because they are supposed to fast for the sake of God and practice moderation in the daily lives, especially during the fasting month.

But I think moderation doesn’t come in a package with some Muslims in Malaysia, as some even go for feasts or breaking fasts buffet in expensive hotels. I know that there are a lot of people who fast during the day and yet they indulge with food during the night, and I am not sure what the learn from their fastingProbably just hunger, and not other things that’s supposed to enrich their soul with the benefit of fasting.Fasting is actually good, according to medical studies, as it helps the digestive system to rest and for the body to detox, but I’m not so sure how many of Malaysian Muslim actually benefited from fasting as all I can see through my own observation is the practice of gluttony and impatience as an added bonus during the entire month. It’s funny to note every year that even though the Ramadan month haven’t even reach the third day yet, Eid sales as well as songs is already in the air. Honestly, I’m not sure what to make of that, but, I’d like to give some tips to the non- Muslim on how to cope with the Ramadan and take advantage of the Malaysian culture during the entire month.

hurm...it’s right?
